I'm cheating on Jason, tonight...

Yup, I have a hot date with Bruce Willis, tonight, and I'm going to be with him for two whole hours while watching "Live Free or Die Hard"!
What a hottie!
I started my love for him as a little girl, watching "Moonlighting" and also own all the other three "Die Hard" movies as well as many, many more other movies...
There's just something about his eyes, lips, smile, crooked nose, muscles, and his voice...
I'll let you all know how it goes, later!

06.28.2007 - Okay, so I didn't have time to go last night, but I'm going to go tonight with Jason and see this movie... I'm super excited too!

06.29.2007 - Well, Jason and I were planning on going to the movie last night, but then I talked to Lori and she said she was making a new recipe for potato/broccoli/chedder soup and burgers so we ended up going over there and eating an awesome meal, then chilling out at home. I guess we'll go next week... Poor Bruce will have to wait!

07.07.2007 - I finally was able to watch this movie and it was awesome! Bruce is hot, as usual, and I just wanted to watch again, right away...
Jason liked it too!

Good deed - take two...

So, I've a bit of time to vent, deal, and heal...
I want to make sure that everyone knows that I was really happy to be able to take those two gentlemen to this wedding. I sure don't think they would have made it there on their own!
I also thought the wedding was out of one of those country weddings magazines...
It was in the country with hills, barns, and cows...
We had valet parking then loaded up in a horse-drawn wagon up this windy hill and over a bridge, up to the old church... it was beautiful!
The bride is a teacher, which played into the wedding a few times... basically, they had all the guests names on little toothpicks then stuck into an apple and placed on the desks in the old Laura-Ingals-style school house and it was so super cute! They also had each table labeled A through Z with red wooden letters, I thought was pretty clever!
They had a band playing and then the favors for everyone was their CD... at first Lori and I thought it was kind of lame, then once we heard the band, we changed our mind! They were really good! Kind of a mix between Ben Harper and Jack Johnson. (It also was probably the one and only good thing about having the table to ourselves... so we could have more than one copy!)
I think the last thing that I really appreciated at the wedding was the fact that instead of presents, they wanted us to donate to the American Cancer Society. Then I found out why... the bride's father is dying of cancer... he was still able to walk her down the isle and dance the father/daughter dance, which of course brought everyone to tears...
It was a beautiful wedding and I'm glad I was able to help Lori take these two men to enjoy this special day...

Is it still a good deed if you do it begrudgingly?

Written by Francie and Lori (I don't have my own blog, but feel the need to vent)
(Bare with us, it's a long one, but needs to be read and written...)
This weekend was a good deed that Francie and I got suckered into. Going to a wedding and escorting 2 very old men. One who is hard of hearing and a back seat driver that would one (or one hundred) up any back seat driver you've ever dealt with I'm sure. And the other old man is dependent on a walker with an unsteady gait, requiring assistance with the walker at times. We will let these nice men remain nameless for now. But here is how it went down. No one wanted to take these men to this wedding because it was 265 miles away. Even though many family members were going. Everyone had a good excuse to not take them, then someone called me (a family member by marriage only) and put me on the spot and asked me to take them. I convinced my sister to go along for moral support. She agreed, although now probably regrets this decision as much as I do. (You're so right, Lori, I don't know how much you owe me right now, but let me tell you, it's a lot!)
It wouldn't have been so bad if all we had to do was transport them to and from events, but when we got to the wedding no one helped us (at all), we felt like hired help (without being paid). We were even sat at a table by ourselves, (just the 4 of us) at the reception. Several people asked us how the drive was, with little winks and understanding smiles. But they didn't make us feel better, just more bitter about the fact that no one was helping us. At one point I felt like I had such a scowl on my face, then it made me laugh, and reminded me of my niece Katya who growls at people. I wanted to growl at people I was so angry. One of the old mans daughter was there too, but did she help out? No, not really at all.
The next day they had a brunch for everyone before heading home. (Which we tried to think of any and every way to get out of, after finding out how the wedding went, even blaming Lori's pregnancy, but then decided to stick it out). When we arrived, my sister and I unloaded the men and asked the one's daughter if there was room at her table, of course there wasn't, she didn't think to save a seat for them. (Actually, there were two seats there next to her, so she probably said no, because then there wouldn't be a place for Lori and me). So again we sat at a table alone the 4 of us. By now furious with the whole situation.
When it was time to leave the daughter of one of the men decided to help us out to the car. (How sweet). She offered to pay for our gas for all our hard work. I politely told her no, not to worry about it. She again insisted and I firmly said no, and then proceeded to tell her how upset I was, and that she best not talk to me right now while I was angry, for fear I may say something I would regret later.
So did we do a good deed? We're not really sure at this point. We did try our best to make it a good experience for the men, but it was awful for us.
-Lori (Francie in blue above)

Okay, so, here's the story from my (Francie's) point of view...
I went to Nikkie's house in Grand Rapids for her birthday and spent the night, then went to bed around 3 a.m. and got up at 7:30 to make my way to Lori's to leave for this super long trip, arriving at home just in time to put my clothes together and take a shower, then headed to Lori's house, pick up these elderly men, and left town at 11 a.m. Didn't really know how long of day this would be...
Miles don't matter too much when it takes 5 or so hours to get somewhere, either way, it was like the never ending story (trip style)!
When Lori said how one of the men (we'll call him "A") was a backseat driver, she was way too nice! "Now, you'll need to turn left here, honey" he'd tell her... (of course, the term "honey" was overdone and said almost at every beginning and end of a sentence, poor Lori), or he'd try to be sly about it and tell the other guy how many more miles we had or where we were going to turn next... (oh, yeah, I almost forgot to tell you, Lori's nickname, besides Honey, was Chauffeur and mine was the Navigator, THE ENTIRE TRIP!!)
Moving one... we stopped about 2 blocks before our hotel to get gas really quick, but they decided to go to the bathroom, taking yet another half hour or so before we were on the road again for two more agonizing minutes.
While at the wedding, we had the men sit down and expected the daughter and son-in-law of one of them to sit with them, but they told us that they'd be sitting a bit closer to the front, instead, so we sat with them for the wedding... (don't worry, it gets better/worse).
I was trying to enjoy myself and ate some cheese and crackers before dinner, when we realized that we all had assigned tables and places to sit. Well, "A" and "B" had sat themselves at table R and Lori and I found that we were to sit at table O, which was fine with us. Apparently, A's daughter was also at table R but decided to help them men over to our table... (apparently there wasn't room). So, as I sat down at our table, Lori turned to me and pointed out that through it all, the only other two people that were supposed to sit at our table weren't there and we were left entertaining these two through dinner. I don't know about you, but for me, when I get mad, I either say something bad, cry, or laugh. Luckily for everyone around me, I laughed and couldn't stop, I was crying so hard because I couldn't stop laughing and could barely breath! (Oh, and this continued the entire dinner every time "A" would do his little throat clearing bubbly/gurgling sound...
There's more... at one point "A" needed to go to the bathroom and so I got his walker for him. He was trying to tell me something and I couldn't hear, and his daughter saw my confused look and came over to help. And help she did, finally... I told her that he needed to go to the bathroom. She said, "oh, well then just take him over to the other side of the barn to the door and there's a bathroom over there." In other words, she expected me to take him, while she did whatever! (Sorry, lady, but I don't do potty breaks and my heart started racing and my palms started sweating with anxiety that I would have to help him in there! And that was just not something I felt I had to do!) So, I turned to "A" and asked him if he heard what she had told me, which I knew he hadn't, so I turned to the daughter and said that "A" didn't hear him, then I strategically moved out of her way, so she could help him and started breathing again, and found Lori as fast as I could!
As Lori mentioned before, I can't count how many people came up to us and ask us how the trip went... by the end of the night, I couldn't talk to anyone and either laughed or gave them a super cheesy two-thumbs up!
We finally headed to the hotel room, after the 20 minute walk to the car with the men (about 15 feet, but as I said before, time trumps distance).
As I write this on the way back home, we continue to hear, bubbly/gurgling sounds along with "is this the tollway" "Are you going to be taking I90?" "Wow, there's a lot of traffic this way" "the navigator's doing a good job" "Oh, now the chauffeur is trying to get into the other lane..." and on and on and on.
Last night, I prayed before I fell asleep, for two things... 1. that someone offered to take these men home with them and 2. that we'd patience.
Unfortunately for us, both prayers/requests/pleads were answered with "no".
I think that I (and Lori too) need to practice that same term. NO!

Life without Natalie

What's life like without Natalie?
Cleaner.
Quiet.
Lonely.

I've put most all Natalie's stuff in her room until she can move it all, but the house has been pretty clean (except when I have to rush to random weddings and birthday parties) but the kitty cats miss her and cry for her to spoil them with soft food, which I try to keep up with but they just eat it like it's a candy bar or something!
I've also kept up with the dishes pretty good, now that I don't have an excuse for why they aren't done. But of course, you know, that no ones going to come over and visit me while it's all clean like this...
Such is life.

It's also pretty quiet in the house. I try to make sure both TVs are on and at the same channel and I've even gotten my radio out, just in case. I never here the bathtub water running every night anymore or "I heart Joey" in a high annoying voice in the early-morning (butt-crack of dawn) hours...

And, of course, it's lonely. I have to make all the leftovers are eaten now and now can assume that when I bring something super yummy back from the restaurant and want to eat it for lunch the next day, that it will actually be there the next day for lunch and not mysteriously gone!

The first day of summer...

This last Thursday really was the longest day of the year!
My best friend, Betsy planned for a sunset wedding on the beach and so I got the entire day off to just chill out and have a good day.
Then, the Monday before, Jason's grandpa passed away and the funeral was set for Thursday morning. Wednesday evening we went to the viewing, where I met the entire extended family, then went to the funeral services Thursday morning, followed with the military gun shots and songs while everyone started (if they hadn't already) sniffling and tearing up. It was definitely the moment I just lost it and caught on with everyone else that sunglasses, inside, was okay to wear.
I hadn't been to a funeral, that I can remember, for about 10 years (unless someone else can think of one) and I'm not in the practice of attending them, but felt that I should be there for Jason and his mom.
After it was all over, I turned to the Bride. She was getting a pedicure and needed me to get groceries/snacks for them to take to the hotel that night and prepare that for her, then met up with her and picked out some lingerie. She went to get her hair done, so I met up with Jason and took him to his softball game, where they kicked major bootie 17 to 2! Once the game was over I went home and changed for the wedding and Jason got ready, then we met at Betsy's house to take her to the beach and had to help pack and get everything together, including Elle's stuff (Elle is her daughter), then we booked it to the beach and then had to wait for the pastor to get there! (Hello! It's a sunset wedding, you can't be late to something like that!!)
Either way, it was absolutely beautiful with the blue layered clouds to the south western sky and the red/orangy sunset to the north western sky with Besty and Steve in the middle!
Jason and I finally left the beach around 10 p.m., went to get dinner at Taco Bell (which I'm currently mad at... excuse me, but when I ask for a crunchwrap with no meat and beans instead, I don't mean put beef on it, then attempt to scrap it off and add beans! Gross! I was a very angry person for a bite or two, let me tell you...), then headed to Jason's to watch a movie with more of his family, then I had to leave and crash in bed at around 11:30 p.m. and I was out!
What a day!

*(As of June 23, 2007, I have gone to 3 weddings and a funeral in the time frame of 2 weeks.)

Jealousy

As told to most everyone I know...
"I've got bragging rights! My little sister is in Hawaii right now with a few friends and has been surfing this week...
So, guess who she's been surfing with?
I'll give you a hint:
-Famous
-Two guys
-They're friends
-They're also in movies together

Matt Damon and Ben Afleck!!
That's right, my little sister has been surfing with Matt and Ben (first name basis, now) for 3 days now!
Apparently, they are really down to Earth, Ben's really outgoing, they're hotter in person, and they were there with an instructor learning how to surf.
Natalie said that the instructor had to push them into the waves and that they kept falling off their boards, but Natalie was there to help them get their boards back (I'm sure she was!!)
Adam and his friend wanted Natalie and her friend to come with them in the deeper part of the ocean to surf, but they waived them off and said they were just fine in the shallow area!
I guess Ben was walking somewhere and was super slow, so Natalie called out to him and said, "hey, you're looking pathetic! You get hurt?" And Ben told her that he got cut on the bottom of his foot... (Poor thing, I'm sure Nurse Nay-Nay will help you!)
Then Natalie told him that they were learning fast and doing really good at their surfing and he told her thanks.
Either way, I'm so jealous!!
What a life!

Wedding belles

Moving on to another topic...
My best friend, Betsy, is getting married in a week and I was able to help her pick out her dress today and it's so pretty! She's getting married on the beach and wanted something simple and inexpensive and that's exactly what we found!
But let me tell you, I really wanted to try on one of those dresses myself...
Maybe one of these days.
You know, I did catch the bouquet at Natalie's wedding! Although I did have to wrestle a little 12-year old girl for it!
ha ha
Poor thing, didn't even have a chance!

I'm fat...

I'm a volumptuous person and I've been okay with it. I feel confident and I'm not depressed about my weight. I know I've got to lose it, and I'll be trying real hard to do so, but sometimes that whole saying, "sticks and stones..." jsut isn't true.
Last Saturday, at a family picnic, a group of us were talking about the wedding and I think I said something along the lines of not being able to see Natalie because her back was turned to me so I could only see Adam. Someone then added, "Yeah, well, none of us will be able to see her anyway because YOU'RE right in front of us!"
I turned to this person and instead of crying or yelling or coming back with something spicy, (I didn't want this person to feel worse), I said, "Thanks." Then I walked away...
I thought about it and decided that it wouldn't make anything better if I just added to the fire, so I went back to the table, put on a stong face and siad, "I have a good come back for that one... just think, when (or if) I ever get married, at least EVERYONE will be able to see me!"

Sometimes there are moments in ones life where the obvious becomes 100% magnified and this was my moment...

So, to all my blog readers, although there are few of you, I'm going to be strong and start working out to be healthy, to be in shape, to be able tto buy new clothes, and so that it will be just a bit harder for people to see me on my wedding day (if I ever have one...).

Pooh Bear got married!!

My little sister, Natalie got married on Sunday. I haven't posted since the 2nd because I've been so busy helping with the wedding stuff. but Everything went perfect! with the entire family and a ton of friends helping, this wedding was absolutely beautiful!
I'd post pictures but I used Nat's camera so she could have the pictures.
From the champagne gold color of the bridesmaids dressing, the vocals, the flowers, to the most beautiful bride, nothing could have made this day better!
My mom worked so hard to add the perfect personal touch to this wedding. Starting with the home-made books for each guest at the reception with the program, the menu, and fun games for each person to fill out (let me tell you that there were a ton of people cheating and asking me for the answers, but of course I helped them!)
And my dad made the most beautiful (I can't remember the name of what it's called) (trelace??)but it's a wooden thing that the couple stand underneath and he made it from the ground up with wood, twigs from my parents house, and even added flowers all over it! I can't believe it was made by hand, but for the fact that I saw him build it during the week! Bob gets props!
I had to sing for the wedding, which I was super nervous about, but it turned out more perfect than any of our practices and that made me happy. AND I DIDN'T CRY! I tried as much as possible not to even look at Natalie before the song because there's just something about weddings, especially my only little sister, that makes me super emotional!
But I think over all that it was my speech that made me more nervous! As the maid of honor, I had to give a toast and i couldn't have been more nervous!
I think it went okay...
It was also really nice to have all our family there and have a huge swim party at DeAnn's the next day too.
I miss Natalie.
I don't know how many times I've cried since she left, but I'm so sad and lonely.
I told a few people that I should have sung the Akon song, "I'm so lonely, I'm so lonely, I have nobody, to call my own..."
My mom had us kids in sets of two so we'd have a built in friend, but she obviously didn't take into consideration that we may just be split apart...
Okay, I'm not going to cry, right now...
Too late...
Anyway, I miss her so much and if you're reading this Natalie, you better make me a promise that you will come back and visit me a lot! And let me come to your house whenever I'm "Natalie sick".

Strawberries 'n' Cream Cake

So many people have asked me how to make this cake (the one I made for Jason's birthday, Lori's birthday, and a barbecue).
Here it is... remember, this is from "Everyday with Rachael Ray" magazine the May 2007 edition on page 62.

Strawberries 'n' Cream Cake
12 servings
prep time: 50 minutes plus cooling
bake time: 30 minutes

Ingredients:
2 sticks (8 ounces) unsalted butter, at room temperature
2 cups plus 6 tablespoons sugar
4 large eggs, at room temperature
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 cups low-fat buttermilk
3 cups flour
2 pints strawberries, hulled
1 1/2 teaspoons cornstarch
1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
8 ounces mascarpone cheese
1 pint heavy cream

Directions:
1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease a large rimmed baking sheet and line with parchment that extends to inch above the rim on all sides. Grease the parchment and set aside.
2. Using an electric mixer, beat the butter and 2 cups sugar at high speed, scraping down the sides occasionally, until fluffy, about 5 minutes. Add the eggs 1 at a time, beating after each addition. Mix in the baking powder, vanilla, baking soda and salt at medium speed. Add half each of the buttermilk and flour and mix at low speed just until smooth. Repeat with the remaining buttermilk and flour.
3. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly. Bake until a toothpick inserted comes out clean, 25 to 30 minutes. Transfer to a large rack to cool, then invert and discard the parchment.
4. Chop half the berries and place in a small saucepan with 2 tablespoons sugar, the cornstarch and lemon juice, simmering over low heat. Cook, stirring often, until thickened, about 5 minutes. Let cool.
5. Using an electric mixer, whisk the mascarpone with the remaining 1/4 cup sugar on low speed, then add the cream until combined. Increase the speed to medium-high and whisk until stiff peaks form, 3 to 4 minutes.
6. Using a serrated knife, cut the cake crosswise into thirds. Set 1 layer on a serving platter and spread half the strawberry puree on top, followed by 1 1/2 cups frosting. Set the second layer on top of the frosting and press lightly into place. Spread the remaining puree on top, then another 1 1/2 cups frosting. Place the third layer on top and press lightly. Coat with the remaining frosting. Slice the remaining berries and scatter on top.

Francie's tips:
-Skip making the cake home-made and buy a box of yellow cake mix and make it. The best is to make three round cakes (one box usually makes 2 round, so figure it out...).
-Slicing the cakes usually ends with the cake splitting when done and falls apart and is not pleasing to look at but still ultimately delicious!
-I also use twice as much berries. Make 2 pints worth fruity glaze to cover each layer.
-I've tried strawberries twice, but the third time used a mix of blackberries and raspberries and got even more compliments on this cake!

Good luck to all who make it and call me if you have questions!
